In
the State of Punjab, there are 2 unaided Sikh minority medical and dental colleges,
namely,
1. Sri Guru Ram Das Institute of Medical Sciences and Research, Sri Amritsar
2. Sri Guru Ram Das Institute of Dental Sciences and Research, Sri Amritsar
Being of one type of minority institutions with similar characteristic situation
in respect to mode of admission, both these Institutes are very much different
from other private un-aided Medical/Dental colleges in the State. In the year
2004, these two Institutes had formed a separate group, named as Association of
Un-aided Sikh Minority Medical and Dental Institutions (Punjab State), for conducting
the competitive admission test for the Sikh minority quota seats in the MBBS and
BDS courses in these Institutes. This arrangement had been done in accordance
with the law laid down by the Hon’ble Supreme Court in the Islamic Academy of
Education case by its order dated 14.8.2003.
This had become absolutely essential to form this Association because all other
private, unaided Medical and Dental Institutes in the Punjab State had decided
to admit their students through the PMET test. These two Institutions had to go
ahead with the admission for the session 2004-05 through this Association as such,
because the admission time was running out and the two high powered committees,
headed by Hon’ble retired High Court Judges required to be constituted by the
State Government for deciding the admission procedure and the fee structure, had
not yet been formed. Therefore, this Association decided to proceed with the admission
to these two Institutions by conducting independent competitive entrance test
on the similar lines as has been done in the earlier years by these institutions,
both in admission procedure and fee structure, the details of which have been
fully incorporated in the Prospectus. The
Admission Supervision Committee, headed by Hon'ble Justice G.R. Majithia (Retd.),
has granted permission to the Association for holding its own competitive entrance
test for admission to 50% Sikh minority quota for the session 2005-06, as during
the previous year, vide its letter No. 1/35/05-1ASC (M)/1512-1514, dated 23.5.2005.
