Sri Guru Ram Das Institute of Medical Sciences & Research
 

Named after the fourth Sikh Guru, Sri Guru Ram Das, the founder of holy city of Amritsar, the Institute of Medical Sciences & Research was started in the year 1997. The first batch passed out in December, 2002. The Institute is affiliated to Baba Farid University of Health Sciences, Faridkot. The MBBS degree is duly recognized by the Medical Council of India, vide letter No. MCI-34(41)/ 2002-Med/30334 dated 31st December 2002, and Government of India, Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, vide letter No. V-11015/7/2002-ME(Policy-I), dated 23rd January 2003.

The Institute is coming up fast at the Amritsar-Mehta Road with a sprawling new campus in about 65 acres of land. Presently, it is recognized for an intake of 50 students for the M.B.B.S. course annually. The Institute has separate hostels for boys and girls with 200 seats each.

A magnificent, four-storey institute building was completed in March, 2000 at a cost of Rs. 16 Crores, wherein the offices of the Director-Principal and Registrar, besides a 400-seat capacity air conditioned conference hall with audio system on each seat and a 1000-seat capacity multipurpose auditorium, all pre- and para-clinical departments, four Lecture theatres of 150 seat capacity each and the Central Library are located.

An ultra modern 992-bed new hospital building has been constructed within the new campus of the Medical Institute and is expected to be functional soon with the latest facilities required of a modern hospital in various specialities and super-specialities, at an estimated cost of Rs. 50 crores.

At present clinical teaching of medical students is conducted at old Sri Guru Ram Das Charitable Hospital, which is 400 bedded hospital located in the heart of Sri Amritsar city near Sri Darbar Sahib (Golden Temple). This hospital is having all the latest equipments and facilities for 50 M.B.B.S. admissions. Electricity supply within the campus is through the Punjab State Electricity Board. In addition, the Institute has installed high power generators. There is round-the- clock uninterrupted electricity supply within the campus including the hostels and residential premises.

At the new Campus, a Cancer Hospital, named Sri Guru Ram Das Rotary Cancer Hospital has started functioning for Radiotherapy and Chemotherapy by a latest Cobalt Unit. Service of Brach therapy is going to be started very soon, equipment and building for which are already in position.

It is on cards that after commissioning of the new hospital, this Institute will be going in for 100 MBBS admissions and also postgraduate courses in several clinical, para-clinical and basic subjects for which space, equipment and staff have already been sufficiently placed in position. The Punjab Government and Baba Farid University of Health Sciences have already done respective inspections and have granted N.O.C. for starting these courses. The Medical Council of India has also completed the process of inspections for the post-graduate courses, and these courses will start from the next academic session.

The Campus is guarded by a strong security team, consisting of ex-army personnel, under the administrative supervision of an officer of the rank of a Lt. Colonel (Retd). The Institute has its own fleet of buses and cabs for carrying students and the staff between the Institute and the city to and fro.
