The institute is coming up fast at the Amritsar Mehta Road with a sprawling new campus in about 65 acres of land. Institute is named after the fourth Sikh Guru, Sri Guru Ram Das, the founder of holy city of Amritsar. The institute of Medical Sciences & Research was started in the year 1997. The first batch of MBBS passed in Dec. 2002. The institute is affiliated to Baba Farid University of Health Sciences, Faridkot. The MBBS degree is fully recognized by the Medical Council of India and Govt. of India, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.
The institute has a separate hostel in the campus, for boys and girls with 200 seats each.
A Magnificent, four storey institute was completed in March 2000 at a cost of Rs. 16 crores, where in the office of the Director-Principal and Registrar, besides a 400 seats capacity air conditioned conference hall with audio system on each seat and a 1000 seat capacity multipurpose auditorium, all para clinical department, four lecture theaters of 150 seat capacity each and the central library are located.
An ultra modern 992-bed new hospital building has been constructed within the new campus of the Medical Institute and is expected to be functional soon with the facilities required of a modern hospital in various specialties and Super-Specialties at an estimated cost of Rs. 50 crores.
The clinical teaching of nursing and Medical Students is conducted in old Sri Guru Ram Das Charitable Hospital, which is 400 bedded in the heart of Sri Amritsar city near Sri Darbar Sahib (Golden Temple). This hospital is having all the latest equipments and facilities for Bsc Nursing students.
Electricity supply within the campus is through the Punjab State Electricity Board. In addition, the institution has installed high power generators. There is round the clock uninterrupted electricity supply within the campus including the hostel and residential premises.
At the new campus, a cancer hospital, named Sri Guru Ram Das Rotary Cancer Hospital has started functioning free Radiotherapy and Chemotherapy by a latest cobalt unit Service of Brachitherapy is started now.
It is on cards that after commissioning of the new hospital, the institute will be going in far 100 MBBS admission and also postgraduate courses in several clinical, Para-Clinical and basis subjects for which space, equipment and staff has already, sufficiently placed in position. The Punjab Govt. and Baba Farid University of Health Sciences have done respective inspections and have granted N.O.C for starting BSC. Nursing. The Medical Council of India has also completed the process of inspection for the post-graduate courses and these courses will start from the next academic session.
